Chapter 14

Garrett

It wasn’t that I didn’t own a suit, I just wasn’t overly excited about wearing one. Though I was more than happy to put one on if it meant I got to go on another date with Madison and hopefully see her in a sexy dress.

Things had been awkward between us after I had gone to her place. It was something I wanted to talk to her about but didn’t want to call her too early in the morning. Then she had called me first thing, told me that she was thinking and feeling the same thing. It had been my plan to see if we could go out again, even just talk outside of work just the two of us. I wanted to explain to her what had been going through my mind the night before and to make sure she was okay.

When we had talked, she seemed like her normal self. I couldn’t tell if she was just good at hiding what she was feeling or that she had a decent night of sleep and was ready to move past everything. Either way, we agreed to go out, and while it had partly been to continue to find the blackmailer, I felt there was more she was asking in having us go out. Or at least I hoped there was.

I spent the day working on getting her the official contract as well as working on her case. It was slow work but I was making progress. I hoped to have an answer for her in a few days, or at least something more concrete to give her.

Going to the opera with her would also give me a chance to see some of the suspects for lack of a better word. To see how people reacted to Madison, how they talked to her, how they looked at her when she wasn’t looking at them. All things that could help lead me to the culprit.

“Have fun at the opera,” Jean said as I left the office a little earlier than normal.

I rolled my eyes at her but smiled. “All in a day's work, my friend,” I said.

“Right. I would pay big money to see you in a monkey suit,” she said.

“I can send you a picture of me and Madison if you’d like.”

“You would like that as it will allow you to have a picture for yourself under the pretense that I want it,” she said.

“Now, that isn’t a bad idea,” I said as if I hadn’t thought the same thing.

“Should I not expect to hear from you early tomorrow?” she asked.

“It’s a Saturday so why would you?” I asked though we usually did talk almost every day even on the weekends.

“Just wondering,” she countered

“That’s none of your business,” I said and she just shook her head at me.

“You’re going to do what you’re going to do. But if you let that woman slip through your fingers because of some obligation or need to protect her or something equally stupid, then you would be a fool.
